The Eldercare Workforce Alliance (EWA) recognizes the role of long-term care physicians in achieving quality, interdisciplinary team care for older adults by celebrating the annual National Day of Recognition for Long Term Care on March 20. This holiday began as an effort by a chapter of the American Medical Director Association to honor AMDA’s founder, William Dodd, MD, CMD. The U.S. Congress formally designated the special day in 2010.

New York, NY — The Eldercare Workforce Alliance (EWA) commends the Public Members of the Advisory Council on Alzheimer’s Research, Care, and Services for their recommendations put forth on May 15, 2012 in conjunction with the release of the National Plan to Address Alzheimer’s Disease. The Members’ recommendations to expand funding and incentives for health care providers to become more knowledgeable about dementia and to encourage individuals to pursue careers in geriatric specialties reflect the need to strengthen the nation’s eldercare workforce. These recommendations echo EWA’s appeal for attention to the eldercare workforce in a March 29 letter to the Council and oral testimony to the Council in April.

Eldercare Workforce Alliance (EWA) co-convener, Nancy Lundebjerg, AGS COO, and EWA policy advisor Gail MacInnes visited with lawmakers on Wednesday, stressing the importance of Title VII and VIII geriatrics health professions funding. They met with nine Congressional offices from both sides of the aisle, in order to discuss with staff the need to support and expand the number of faculty and educators who provide geriatrics training.
