Building the Evidence for the Role of Social Work in Comprehensive Care Coordination

EWA representatives Patricia Volland, senior vice president and director of the Social Work Leadership Institute at the New York Academy of Medicine, and Robyn Golden, director of Older Adult Programs at Rush University Medical Center, discuss the vital role of social work in care coordination in this volume of the Council of Social Work Education's Gero-Ed Center Aging Times. Ms. Golden and Ms. Volland, who also serve as the cochairs of the National Coalition on Care Coordination (N3C), note that "as the complexity and severity of individuals’ compounding chronic conditions increase, there is a greater need for support in improving access, adherence, and coordination of medical and social services."

A new Fact Sheet, published by the AARP Public Policy Institute (PPI), highlights selected provisions in the Affordable Care Act that address caregivers in health care and in long-term services and supports. The fact sheet points to how the ACA "propmotes new models of care that will better recognize the family caregiver as a key partner in care and provide more support for family caregivers, especially those who are caring for people with multiple chronic conditions."

If family caregivers were no longer available, the economic cost to the U.S. health care and long-term services and supports (LTSS) systems would increase astronomically.

Already, a new report says one of the biggest losers is aging research, despite a rapidly graying population that promises a worsening epidemic of dementia, among other illnesses."
