New York Times' New Old Age blogger Paula Span discusses the shortage of health care professionals with expertise in treating older patients including geriatricians, nurse-practioners, social workers, geriatric psychiatrists, and others. The real challenge, according to Nancy Lundebjerg, Eldercare Workforce Alliance co-convenor and American Geriatrics Society chief operating officer, is "Can we keep the shortage of people with this training from getting any worse?”

Late last week, Sen. Barbara Boxer proposed legislation to address a looming shortfall in the workforce to care for the aging population. The bill is co-sponsored by Aging Committee Chairman Herb Kohl, Bernie Sanders and Republican Susan Collins and is a slimmed-down version of legislation Boxer has introduced in previous congresses.

The Eldercare Workforce Alliance praised Sen. Herb Kohl (D-Wis.) for his attention to seniors’ issues on Monday, following his announcement last week that he won’t seek reelection in 2012. Kohl chairs the Senate Aging Committee and has been active on a range of healthcare issues, including the administering of drugs in nursing homes.
